Training opportunities
As part of the UK GIBA Network+, we are delivering a comprehensive training programme designed to equip our members with the skills, tools, and methods essential for advancing GIBA research.
Our training programme aims to foster future interdisciplinary collaboration and enhance communication across the network. This programme is centred around four key areas: theoretical concepts, data analysis, experimental techniques, and career development. We expect the training courses will take a variety of formats (in-person, hybrid, webinars, and hackathons) to enable wide participation across the network.
Microbiome-Diet video series online Q&A
Date: June 25th (10 am – 11:30 am)
Location: Online (Microsoft Teams)
We have recently launched the UK GIBA Network+ Microbiome-Diet video series, a collection of short video lectures delivered by network members of Working Group 5 (freely available on YouTube: Microbiome-Diet series (working group 5) – YouTube).
Following this launch, we will be hosting an online Q&A session on June 25th, giving our audience the opportunity to ask questions directly to all of the speakers on any of the topics covered. We will be joined by the following panellists:
- Sofia Pinto, PhD student at the University of Porto
- Alex Almeida, Group Leader at the University of Cambridge
- Efrat Muller, Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Cambridge
- Doroteya Staykova, scientist and co-founder of Multicore Dynamics Ltd
- Amisha Modasia, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Quadram Institute
- Patricia Sanz Morales, Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Reading
This event is free to attend and open to everyone from the UK GIBA Network+.

Metagenomics & Microbial Ecology Bioinformatics Workshop
Date: July 6th – 9th
Location: Online
For our next GIBA training workshop, we are organising an online training session, in partnership with the Quadram Institute, on bioinformatics approaches for metagenomics and microbial ecology.
What will we cover?
This workshop will cover both the theory and hands-on practice of whole-metagenome shotgun sequencing analysis. We will use a browser-based system to provide access to a Linux terminal (used during the first two days) and RStudio (used in the second part of the workshop). The trainers will guide participants through the entire workflow, from quality control (QC) of the sequencing output and removal of host sequences to taxonomic and functional profiling, resulting in raw feature tables.
In the second part, we will use R to explore numerical ecology in microbiome research, measuring diversity within and across samples.
The course will be structured as follows:
- Monday, July 6th: Introduction, quality checks, host removal (A. Ponsero, A. Telatin)
- Tuesday, July 7th: Taxonomic and functional profiling (A. Ponsero, A. Telatin)
- Wednesday, July 8th: Microbiome ecological analysis (F. Hildebrand, W. Boulton)
- Thursday, July 9th: Microbiome ecological analysis (F. Hildebrand, W. Boulton)
Who is this course for?
This course is aimed at GIBA researchers who wish to develop their computational skills in microbiome analysis, with a particular focus on shotgun metagenomic data. Some familiarity with RStudio or Linux would be beneficial, but it is not required.
